How to ask readers for a book review

Three messages to ask your readers for an honest review, with nothing promised in return.

The more readers you have, the more reviews you can ask for. Makebook helps you write the book that brings them back.

Write my book

The guide

A review is an independent book's best sales tool, but it can't be bought or negotiated. The rule is simple: ask for an honest review, with no conditions, no reward and no mention of the rating you expect. Don't promise a free book, a refund or a bonus in exchange.

The ideal moment is the end of the book. Slip a short message on the last page that thanks the reader and invites them to share how they felt. By email or private message, be brief, personal and specific: mention what may have moved them, without forcing their hand.

Only ask people who truly read the book and want to say so. A review obtained in a hurry or in exchange for a favor is easy to spot, and can cost you your account. Ten sincere reviews beat fifty suspicious ones.

Frequently asked questions

Can I offer a free book in exchange for a review?

No. Amazon doesn't accept reviews obtained in exchange for anything, whether a free book, a refund or a gift, and may remove those reviews.

When should I ask a reader for a review?

Right after they finish the book, while the emotion is still there, or a few days after reading, with a simple message and no pressure.

Should I ask for a five-star rating?

No. Ask for an honest review, positive or not. A sincere, nuanced review inspires more trust than a string of five stars.
