Copyright page for a book

Your book's copyright and legal notice page, based on French publishing practice.

Your rights page is ready. The book it protects is missing: Makebook helps you write it.

Write my book

The guide

The copyright page goes on the back of the title page. It reminds readers that the work is protected and says who holds the rights. This model follows French practice, based on the Intellectual Property Code, notably articles L.122-4 and L.122-5.

Specify that you're self-published, add the ISBN if you have one, and mention the legal deposit. For a non-fiction book, a short disclaimer says that the content is informational and doesn't replace professional advice.

This template is a standard starting point. Adapt it if your book contains quotations, third-party images or a cover made by someone else.

Frequently asked questions

Is a copyright page mandatory?

Copyright exists from the moment of creation, with no formality. The page is still useful: it informs the reader, specifies permitted uses and mentions the ISBN and legal deposit.

What should this page contain?

The © symbol, your name, the year, the "All rights reserved" notice, the reminder of the intellectual property code articles, the publisher or self-publishing mention, the ISBN and the legal deposit date.

Does this text count as legal advice?

No, it's a commonly used template. For a particular case (quotations, illustrations, transfer of rights), have a professional review it.
